Post Acute Withdrawal and Benzos | What is it like to withdrawal from Benzos?
Hi there welcome to fostering resilience we’re bringing you everything you ever wanted to know about addiction recovery it is a rainy day here in south florida and since my studio is not ready yet i need to film outside and i’m wanting to bring this to you today monday and not be delivering late so hopefully you’re gonna
Be able to hear me okay with the rain and the thunder that’s going to be coming up in the background so i’m kj foster and again welcome to fostering resilience and i am somebody who is in long-term recovery from an addiction to alcohol and i’m also an expert in the area of addiction recovery and relapse prevention
In today’s video i’m sharing with you information about post acute withdrawals relative to benzodiazepines so i’m going to share with you symptoms of acute withdrawal and post acute withdrawal relative to benzos and how you can go about best moving through those post acute withdrawal symptoms and be sure to stick
Around for the end of the video because i will be sharing month of june and the lucky recipient of the $50 gift card so don’t go away okay first up what are benzos what are benzodiazepines benzodiazepines are a medicine that are commonly prescribed for anxiety and panic disorders and what a lot of people
Do not realize however about benzos is that they are highly addictive so the way that they react in the brain is that the brain becomes very quickly addicted to benzodiazepines and so most often a a physician at least a physician who is is prescribing the medication appropriately will not typically prescribe more than
Two weeks worth of benzodiazepines because they are so highly addictive but i can tell you from my own experience is that that’s generally not the case i’ve met people who have been on benzodiazepines for years and this creates you know a lot of taking benzodiazepines so some common benzos are medications
Such as valium xanax klonopin and ativan and there are a few others but those are pretty much the most common ones you will find here is a list of the common symptoms relative to the acute phase of benzo withdrawal so this is the the first phase the immediate phase that you enter into the moment that you stop taking
Benzos and i’d like to add before i lift the symptoms that any withdrawal from benzos should be medically monitored because it’s very dangerous to withdraw from benzos on your own because you could go into a seizure i mean it all depends upon of course the the quantity the length of time and all of those factors
But i always recommend that no matter what you’re withdrawing from that it always being medically monitored at a detox facility so that is is number one so what are what are these symptoms the symptoms there are many many symptoms because what will happen is that you you will go into you know panic panic attacks then and
Experience a lot benzos because what happens is in with benzos especially chronic use of benzos is that you know you take the benzo to relieve the anxiety and what happens is that as soon as the eng xiety wears off the anxiety is loaded – sort of like the back end and so you have more anxiety on the back end that
Needs to be relieved from the benzos so this is how the addiction process happens and what happens is after taking benzos for a long period of time you wind up with a lot of anxiety it’s like this brick wall of anxiety winds up hitting you all at once and and it’s very uncomfortable and and it’s it’s it’s why most people
Have a really really hard time if they’ve been taking benzos for a long period of time and need to be medically assisted typically with their with their benzo withdrawal not just the acute withdrawal but also the post acute phase but let’s first share the the symptoms of the acute phase so they are dizziness
Blurry vision anxiety of course panic attacks mood swings insomnia headaches muscle pain chest pain nausea vomiting increased sweat output tremors accelerated heartbeat impaired memory impaired thought processes hearing problems and a sense of detachment from the self or the surrounding environment so those are common
Symptoms during the acute phase of benzo withdrawal okay next up what are some of the common symptoms of the post acute withdrawal phase the post acute withdrawal phase being the phase that occurs after the acute withdrawal and the post acute withdrawal phase can last for up to 18 months to two years and generally
With most pause symptoms post acute unfortunately with benzos benzos are again one of the most difficult you know acute withdrawal and one of the most difficult post-acute withdrawal comes to the the length of time that it takes to actually recover from especially prolonged benzo use so let’s start with what are
Some of the common symptoms of the post acute withdrawal phase some of the common symptoms are insomnia depression a ringing in the ears called tinnitus muscle pain abnormal muscle weakness episodes of uncontrolled muscle shaking painful muscle tremors gastrointestinal distress disruptions of normal mental
Function and altered nerve sensations such as pain tingling burning or numbness that appear in the upper or lower extremities and some of these symptoms will fade away over time but depending upon the chronicity you know and the in the length of time that you’ve been using benzos or maybe you know you’re watching this
For a loved one that your loved one has been using benzos some of those issues may never go away like some of those issues like gastrointestinal issues nerve pain some of those will will last and and and not that they’ll they’ll be chronic and that they’ll be you know constant but they they probably will
Come and go if you’re somebody who you know i’ve heard and met people who have been using benzos for twenty years you know and when you’ve been using benzos for that length of time you will have some residual effects that will not go away and again which makes it so hard to to be able to come off of benzos typically most
People when it comes to treatment of benzos and and how to move through you know the post acute withdrawal phase most people will have to be weaned you know off of benzos slowly and not something that you’re gonna stop all at once and also you know it will probably take some medically assisted treatment for those
Medically you know serious symptoms such as depression and anxiety so taking some other like non narcotic medication that’s gonna help you to move through those phases and also when it comes when it comes to just being able to cope with post acute withdrawal symptoms i have a video that i’m going to put a link up here
