Hey everyone!

How to treat a urinary tract infection or uti stay tuned to find out what’s up guys welcome back to the channel for those of you don’t know my name is edgeman and i’m a pharmacist and i enjoy making these videos about common questions patients have about medications or any healthcare related topic so make sure you subscribe for more content now the rest of

The video a uti or urinary tract infection is an infection of the urethra or any part of the urinary tract is usually caused by a bacteria and a common hallmark symptom is a feeling of burning when urinating in my previous video i talked about how to treat that burning sensation when urinating with an over-the-counter medication called azo i’ll put that link

To that video in the description below so you guys could refer to it in that video i talked about how azo treats the burning sensation of a uti when you’re urinating however it does not actually treat the infection in order to actually treat the uti we need to have antibiotics prescribed and in this video i’m going over the common antibiotics used for a uti the

First medication that’s used is nitrofurantin or also the brand name is macrobid hey guys i thought to change it to format i actually show you guys the medication while i’m talking about it so the first medication is nitrofurantoin macrobit is a brand name let me show you guys the capsules okay so this medication some key points to know is that you want to take

This medication with food and this medication also just like azo causes discoloration of the urine and it’s typically a brownish color so when you’re taking this medication your urine might be a different color and typically for patients it’s the color brown in addition you want to avoid against medication if you’re pregnant so especially in the last trimester of

Pregnancy you want to avoid taking macrobid but this is by far the most common medication for utensil every time i see this antibiotic i almost always assume uh it’s a urinary attractive infection but of course you can never swim until we actually concur that it is a uti but typically i’ve never seen this medication used for anything else besides a urinary tract

Infection the second medication that’s most commonly used to treat a urinary tract infection is called backstrom or the generic name is sulfamethoxazole and trimethylprint so here is bactrim it’s a generic bottle of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim it’s a pretty big bottle it’s a 500 count um so let me show you guys the actual tablets so some key points to note

With this medication is if you have any allergy to sulfur you want to avoid taking this medication so this medication has a contraindication for patients who have a sulfur allergy because there’s a sulfur component in there and i’ll make a video in the future talk about the importance of both pharmacists and also patients to be aware of allergies especially soft

Allergy and which medications have contraindications to sulfur now another key point to make is that this medication causes photosensitivity photo meaning light so sensitive to light so if you’re taking this medication it’s not advised to be out of the sun for too long i’m not talking about like going out getting your mail from your mailbox if not if you’re out

On the beach with a lot of with the sun really hitting your skin it does cause your skin to be a little more sensitive to the sun so i’ll keep that in mind and also make sure you take this medication with at least eight ounces of water it helps with the renal system of your kidneys to help process this benefit education so that’s a key point i tell patients for on

Bactrim to make sure you drink with plenty of water a third medication used to treat a urinary tract infection is called fossomycin or monural and this medication is typically not as common as the first two that we talked about mainly because of the fact that it’s relatively expensive compared to the other two and insurances don’t typically cover this medication

And that’s why we don’t have it in stock we have had it in stock i have dispensed it before but typically it’s not a common medication and what else i would show you guys however some key things to note about this medication is that it’s actually a one-time dose so you take it once and that’s it whereas like another medication it’s a longer duration of time a

Couple days to take it with fossilizing you only take it one time and it’s a powder which you mix it with water and you take it some tablet or a capsule so those are your three most common antibiotics used to treat a uti there are a couple of other antibiotics used as alternatives if the bacteria for that infection is resistant to those antibiotics but we’ll save

That for another video i hope you guys enjoyed watching this video and learn something new if you guys did please give me a big thumbs up make sure to comment any questions or feedbacks you guys have for me until then i’ll see you guys next time
