A tutorial on how to give both eye drops and eye ointment to your dog.
Hi there italy again with griffith small animal hospital and i’m actually here with one of our patients today this is bentley and we’re going to show you how to do eye medications he really wants this treat so as always we try to make this a fun experience have plenty of treats ready and what we’re going to do first is show how to give an eye drop for this tutorial
I’m really just using a cleaning solution your vet may have given you a medicated drop in a little dropper bottle it’s basically the same top it should just have a drop and when you put it in the eye you just turn it over give it a little squeeze until one drop comes out and then you’re done and after he’s trying to get his treats i’m sorry and after you do the
Drop will show you how to put in at white mint orvis can be a little bit scarier than drops because you do have to put a little bit on the directly on the eye so it can’t be scary especially if your dog isn’t used to it family so bailey is usually really good for those eye medications he’s a usual with eye medications so he’s um used to what we’re going to be doing
Today and i thought he would be good for this tutorial so let me get everything ready and then we’ll be back with a lake you ready okay we’re going to start with the eye drops and bentley’s here and he’s ready to go and i’ve gotten streets up on a table therefore when we’re done he’s looking for them now actually billy he said good boy so what i usually do is with
My i’m right-handed so i have the drops in my right hand and then with my left hand i just hold the bottom lid and they’re their chin just like that and then i gently take their upper lid with my pinky finger hold it open and just let the drop fall in like that here billy you do the other eye you sit and then he gets a treat so he knows that he was a good boy and
We’ll do the other eye and it’s the same way except i use my finger instead of my thumb to hold the bottom lid down once again my pinky finger kind of pulls up on that upper lid and you just let the drop fall in and you may miss and it’s fine if you miss just go back and make sure the drop gets in so they get their medication so now i’m going to show you augment
He thinks it’s a treat an ointment can be a little more difficult because you have to get a little strip in their eye but i hold the same way i know there’s cheats up there and treats are obviously a good distraction but i’ll hold the same way and go ahead and have your ointment ready to go and you’re going to hold it the same way and just put a little strip so
Only the ointment is touching the eyeball and then you just kind of rub it all around and the eye and then we do the other eye the same way make sure that metal tip doesn’t touch their eye and the pointman will kind of stick to their to their eye when you get it in there and so it will naturally come off of the tip of the tube so you don’t really have to worry
About that and like i said bentley’s used to eye medications so he’s a pretty good boy for it so like i said bentley’s used to his eyedrops he’s been getting them for a long time he’s a good boy but if you have a dog that isn’t used to eye drops or doesn’t like having them put in or sometimes those eyes are pretty painful and so they don’t like having the drops
Or let’s put in just because they’re painful you can always if you have a friend that come over can come over a spouse a child you can put them to work and have them hold for you and let me show you how it like me you can have someone just hold the head for you like this and also sort of give them attention and distract them from what’s happening in their eye and
He’s just going to roll over for me billy what’s he doing but yeah if you just it’s a good you know someone can just give him a hug and then you can come and put the eye meds in that way yeah are we done and then he can have his toy too little teddy bear so thanks for watching how to give eye medications with me and billing and if you have any questions please
Feel free to leave a comment below and if you would like to see any other tutorials please leave a comment and let us know thanks for watching bye really are you a service dog huh say thank you
