Dexamethasone also called as a decker drug is a type of corticosteroid drug that was first synthesized in 1957 it is a well-known drug in medical field we use it commonly for medical conditions like autoimmune disorders cancers or endocrine disorders in fact for co19 patients when they have a severe lung condition called as a rds or acute respiratory distress
Syndrome we have already been used in decadron or a similar corticosteroid drug it is available all across the globe and a huge advantage of dexamethasone is it is available at a really low price or the last few months every search trial was conducted at the university of oxford in the united kingdom in this trial which is also called as a recovery trial in this
Trial they compared 2,100 kobe 19 patients who received dexamethasone to 4,300 kobe 19 patients who did not receive any dexamethasone among critically ill ventilator patients dexamethasone was able to reduce mortality rate or death rate by 1/3 yes dexamethasone was able to reduce mortality rate by 1/3 it means that about one out of eight ventilator patients would
Be saved by dexamethasone similarly this study also found that one among 25 patients who required only oxygen were also saved by dexamethasone these results are pretty significant so far there is no drug that is proven to save lives of kobe 19 patients for the first time dexamethasone becomes the first drug to save lives of kobe 19 patients whatever we discussed
So far is fantastic but i also want to point out few drawbacks here first of all this drug is effective only among critically ill patients who are on ventilators what percentage of kobe 19 patients are on ventilators so less than 5% so it’s effective only in less than 5% of kobe 19 patients it is not effective in kobe 19 patients who only have a milder disease
So unfortunately it does not really help with 95 percent of the patients who have over 19 a second thing is this drug is not curative this is not like an antibiotic to treat bacterial infection this drug does not kill virus this drug reduces the impact of koruna virus on all human body and does improves mortality rate third thing is this data is not published yet
By the time this data gets published some of the data may vary a little bit and finally this drug is not a miracle drug although it is saving lives and although it is a huge leap forward in the treatment of kobe 19 patients we are still in the beginning of our journey to find an effective drug for the treatment of i hope you like my video on dex on that is on
