One of our viewers brought crucial information to us regarding Ian’s recent behaviors and how it’s related to his medications. We hope this video helps others who are using or looking to use autism related medications. Thank you.
Hey everybody tell me this hasn’t happened to you before you’re scrolling through the comments section and you see things in autism communities like hey you shouldn’t have vaccinated those kids or hey maybe you should have put these kids on a casein-free diet you scoot down the comment section a little more uh you start to see comments like you must have voted for
Trump you must have voted for biden you scroll down a little more people are calling each other nazis so on and so forth and then you wonder why you even read comments in the first place well every once in a while we get a comment that we’re actually glad we read and we read a comment recently my wife and i that kind of rocked our world a little bit it’s one of
Those things where as a parent you realize that you might not have only impacted your child unknowingly negatively but might have caused permanent harm or damage and that’s a very heavy thing to deal with fortunately we don’t think permanent damage was done to ian and we’re referring to side effects of his medication now initially when we posted a video about
Ian’s new stims there were things like him moving his lips around squinting a lot um sudden jolts in his body that looked like tourette’s or nervous ticks and we thought that these were just new stims and i hope you’ll give us some allowance because as autism progresses we learn more people suggest new things we do more research that’s just part of the process
When we first got in on risperidone we researched side effects as any parent would do and we found that some of the side effects were the potential for increased breast size and in male or female and extra weight gain and also sleepiness and drowsiness was a side effect um we did notice a little bit of all those things but it was well within control and things
Were going okay and i would i would say as we’ve said in our other videos that it was a night and day difference ian is a much different creature if you want to use that term on medication than off it’s like jekyll and hyde i’ve used that reference before now we didn’t know about tardive dyskinesia and i’m willing to bet most of you watching this video haven’t
Heard of tardive dyskinesia until i just mentioned it and the person in the comments and and thank you for your comment by the way um mentioned that to us and at first i was like oh is this another one of those like pseudoscience things you know one of those quack things and i decided to do research on it something a little voice inside my head told me you need
To dig a little deeper on this and i did look into it and sure enough um tardive dyskinesia i can hardly say that word is a side effect of antipsychotics which respiraton is one so immediately my wife and i started talking about it like what are we gonna do about this um we were worried that some of those side effects that ian was exhibiting might be permanent
So we decided to schedule a doctor’s appointment and see if we could get ian on a different medication um also one of our concerns was jumping from one frying pan to another so right now ian is on abilify which as you many of you know who have children on the autism spectrum that abilify is another antipsychotic so are we just robbing peter to pay paul well i
Didn’t do this video for about two weeks until after ian had already been on abilify because we kind of wanted to see how he reacted to it so far so good i would say things are a little bit better it doesn’t mean things are going to stay that way but we’re watching him like a hawk to make sure that he doesn’t have the same side effects that he did on respirator
Or else what’s the point right so we’re hopeful now i’ve heard other autism parents say that when they medicate their children over time they kind of go through that whole medication cocktail where they go from one medication to the next to the next because there’s always side effects i mean any of you who have watched any commercial pharmaceutical commercial um
Obviously at the end they have those clauses those statements you know make house diarrhea vomiting um neck pains back pains uh maxing out your credit card so on and so forth there’s all these different side effects that come with any medication so for those who would say in the comments why don’t you just take them off medication it’s doing more harm than good
Um i think you’re really oversimplifying things we would love as parents not to put any of our kids on any medication and just have them live normal healthy lives but they don’t live normal healthy lives ian has a tremendously hard time when he’s off of medication like i said he’s a different person as a matter of fact when we took him off her spiridone because
Of the side effects there was a period there where he was off medication and we were waiting to hear back from the doctor and ian got into big trouble at school he became very aggressive he lashed out at the teacher he lunged forward at her it scared her enough to the point where she contacted the principal they have a resource officer there and that was strike
One then he got on the bus about a day later and some of the kids there were teasing him and these were other special needs kids who were teasing him and ian reacted poorly and he started twisting and hurting one of the kids arms who was teasing him now ian normally never acts like this when he’s on medication and so to oversimplify and say things like hey just
Take him off of medication um that’ll fix everything no you’re you’re oversimplifying the situation um there’s a reason we had them on medication in the first place um as you can see from some of this footage and i don’t want to show a lot because we said we wouldn’t show meltdown videos but you can see here the ian off medication is acting very poorly he’s
Having a very hard time not to mention his anxiety levels were through the roof i mean he would say and still even on medication he complains like if he accidentally scratches the table lightly or he drops a nintendo controller and maybe dings a little bit like any little thing will set him off um and he’ll feel guilty about it and just go on this whole tirade
About how terrible life is and everything like that there are very strong and compelling reasons to keep them on medication i hope i made that case very clear um so yeah we are trying his parents to do the right thing to get him on the most compatible medication i don’t think any medication is going to be perfect we will keep you posted in future videos about
How things are going um but just know in the meantime yeah we may have made a mistake we may have goofed because we didn’t do enough research on respiradone but we i would say brittany and i we we did a lot of research we went to two doctors and both of them recommended respect yeah we went to two doctors we got the second opinion um and you don’t know what you
Don’t know i mean we we are in the information age and as such we are in the information overload age there’s a lot of stuff out there and it’s very easy for things to fall through the cracks and again we’re very appreciative of this person um highlighting that comment and making that known to us so we can get em back on the right track so also if you have any
Comments that are not anti-trump or anti-biden or political nature please leave them below and please be very civil in the comments and we would love to respond to you thanks you
