HSC 227 Project
Hi my name is jasmine sweeney and today i’m going to be teaching you guys about adderall so what is adderall adderall is the brand name for a combination of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine it’s a prescribed stimulant used to treat adhd or narcolepsy what it does is it alters naturally occurring chemicals in your brain by enhancing neurotransmitters like dopamine
Norepinephrine into a much smaller degree serotonin it’s classified as a schedule 2 drug which means it has a high potential for abuse and it could lead to psychological or physical dependence okay so adderall and how it affects the body is actually extremely unique what it does is it increases the three neurotransmitters that i stated on a previous slide which are
Serotonin norepinephrine and dopamine what it essentially does is it brings the brain down from a state of overstimulation to a state of a baseline stimulation which is typically where most individuals are or start it taps into the part of the brain that is extremely hyperactive and responsible for impulses and it increases inattention and indecision it helps
People with adhd slow things down and be still in their own mind and bodies which is what these individuals who suffer from adhd cannot do on their own this adjustment of dopamine levels in the brain it allows an individual to have better clarity and focus so you can kind of think of it as like someone who doesn’t have the best eyesight and they go to see a
Doctor and they prescribed them eyeglasses so before seeing the physician they had blurriness they couldn’t focus on things but after seeing the physician they get prescribed eyeglasses and when they put them on for the first time all of a sudden everything is clear and in focus so you can kind of think of adderall as having the same effect for an individual who
Suffers from attention disorder there are many risks and consequences associated with adderall i listed some here these are withdrawal symptoms and adverse side effects some being fatigue seizures aches lack of motivation strong cravings tremors anxiety mood swings insomnia panic attacks stroke and difficulty concentrating adderall is extremely susceptible to abuse
And addiction a lot of times what patients do is they’ll increase their dosage levels to weigh higher than what their physician originally recommended and they grow a sense of dependency so once they’re off of it they suffer severe withdrawal symptoms and end up abusing adderall and getting back into it adderall has many different brand names and street names some
Prescription names are maida’s evq edsenies vivants and some common street names are addies speed crank zing smart pills and study buddies adderall has two forms one form is immediate release which is typically seen in a tablet and the second is extended release which is in a capsule there are three methods of use which is how you get it administered or introduced
Into your body which it can be snorted injected or taken orally and stats and trends with adderall on the left hand side i have a figure showing grades eight tenth and twelfth grade in the us from 2009 to 2021 and 12th grade starts at 5.4 percent in 2009 and decreases significantly to 1.8 percent in 2021 but of course these numbers fluctuate and they could go up
Again on the right hand side i have a heat map of per capita of amphetamine of the us and it shows the ratio relative to the lowest state and amphetamine right now we’re at 25.52 milligrams per capita so i mean it’s not horrible but it’s still not great and these are my references to all the information on my slides thank you
